About Song & Lyrics
“Katteni Shiyagare” has been widely recognized as Kenji Sawada’s representative song since its release in 1977.
The song’s title is derived from the 1960 French film “Breathless,” and the lyrics are influenced by the film, although there is no direct connection to the film’s storyline.
When performing this song, Kenji Sawada became famous for wearing a cream-colored three-piece suit and throwing a matching soft hat. This performance had such a significant impact that children at the time imitated it. His performance was visually striking and highlighted his charisma.
Inferring the protagonist’s feelings from the lyrics, we can see that while he doesn’t want to part with her, his love for her and his male pride are preventing him from letting her go. This conflicted state of mind is reflected in the careless and rough title, “Katteni Shiyagare” (Do as You Please).
Translation (Unformal):
I’m tossing and turning against the wall,
Listening with my back turned.
I guess you’re really leaving.
It’s not all bad, you know.
I can hear you gathering up memories,
Stuffing them into your bag.
I hope you’ll be happy if you leave.
If you ever want to come back, please do.
Just let me look cool for a little while.
Please leave while I’m pretending to be asleep.
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
from “Katte ni shiyagare” / Kenji Sawada
