About the Song
Composed and arranged by Naoya Matsuoka, a leading jazz pianist and pioneer of Latin fusion music in Japan, this song creates a carnival-like atmosphere.
The lyrics by Kan Chin-fu (a lyricist known for many hits including “Osaka Bay Blues”) brilliantly capture the passionate, carnival-like vibe of the song.
Although not explicitly mentioned, the setting is likely the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
I’ve heard that during the Carnival’s excitement, fleeting romances often blossom, prompting the state of Rio de Janeiro to distribute free condoms. (I’m a bit tempted to experience it for myself.)
In the carnival, the protagonist woman sees an opportunity when she becomes separated from her lover (or husband).
“Ah, tonight is Carnival, everything is a dream,” she lets herself be swept away, kissed, and embraced by someone.
She finds him beyond the parade.
He stands on the street corner as if awakened from the dream (Carnival).
But that’s not it; what she seeks is a burning passion.
Just like this Carnival, She wants him to kiss and embrace me with that intense passion, the protagonist seems to plead.
Truly, it’s a classic song with a perfect match of Latin emotion in melody, lyrics, and performance.

In 1981, Akina Nakamori passed a television audition program, “Star Tanjou!” (Star Birth!), and made her debut with the single “Slow Motion” in 1982.
She went on to achieve successive hits with songs like “Shojo A,” “Second Love,” “North Wing,” and “Kazari Janai no yo Namida wa.”
In 1985, she won the Japan Record Award for two consecutive years with “Mi Amore” and in 1986 with “DESIRE -Jounetsu-.”
Although she took a break from October 2010 due to health issues, she continued her music career at a controlled pace, appearing as a special guest at the 65th NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen in 2014 and releasing a cover album, “Utahime 4 – My Eggs Benedict.”
As a fan, I hope she doesn’t overexert herself and occasionally blesses us with her mature songs.
What I love most about Akina is the passion I feel in her singing.
It truly feels like her soul is embedded in every song.
At times, that soulfulness seems so poignant and sad that it reaches out and touches the listener. I believe she channels the cries of her soul into her music.
She is truly an amazing singer and artist.
